Every year I look forward to December when web professionals and business organizations post their online Advent calendars.

Who doesn’t want to learn strategies and tips about the web, technology, and business?

For the ninth year, I’m publishing a collection of online Advent calendars for web professionals.

Whether you’re a web designer, developer, programmer, user experience professional, digital marketer, blogger, or writer, you’re bound to find an interesting Advent calendar in my collection.

For long-time readers of my blog, you’ll notice some veteran calendars in the list: Web Performance, Perl, Lean UXmas, and several new ones.

Let me know which calendar is your favorite!

Advent Calendars for Web Professionals

Security Christmas

New to me this year, the Norwegian agency Bekk has created 11 Advent calendars focused on design, strategy, and innovation.

I’m including four of their calendars in this post, but you can access all calendars from their 2020 Bekk Christmas calendar announcement.

First up, the Security Christmas calendar with tips and resources for creating secure web solutions.

UX Christmas

Returning for the second year, Bekk’s UX Christmas calendar shares inspiration, insights, and case studies as well as tips on tools.

The articles are short (two to four minute reads) and written in English or Norwegian.

Strategy Christmas

In their Strategy Christmas calendar, Bekk shares insights from their product and business strategists on how you can improve your business.

Talks Christmas

Given the COVID pandemic, we’re all giving more online presentations, meetups, and workshops. Which is why I was excited to discover Bekk’s Talks Christmas calendar.

You’ll find listicles, tips, and case studies from seasoned speakers.

A11y Advent Calendar

I was glad to see Kitty Giraudel’s A11y Advent Calendar, where they’ll be publishing an accessibility tip each day on his blog.

Their first tip discusses what accessibility is and how it blends into inclusive design.

Perl Advent Calendar

It’s been 21 years since the first Perl Advent Calendar launched, one of the longest online technology Advent calendars I know about.

The 2020 Perl Advent Calendar looks back at their 20+ year archive to bring you the best of Perl code.

24 Days in December

One of my favorite Advent calendars I look forward to every year is 24 Days in December, a PHP-focused calendar.

Why is it one of my favorites? The uplifting stories the authors share about their work and the community.

It’s one of the few Advent calendars focused on a programming language that doesn’t include code snippets or code examples.

Advent of Code

Created by Eric Wastl, the 2020 Advent of Code calendar offers small programming puzzles.

You don’t need a computer science background to solve the puzzles, only some programming knowledge and problem solving skills.

Web Performance Calendar

The speed geek’s favorite time of the year, the Web Performance Calendar from Planet Performance delivers tactics and strategies for improving performance in your web apps and sites.

Lean UXmas

Returning for their sixth year, the top articles from 2020’s Agile & Lean UX News are highlighted in the 2020 Lean UXmas calendar, curated by Kathryn Leach and Adrian Howard from QuietStars.

24 Jours de Web

Another long-time Advent calendar for people who work on the web, 24 Jours de Web returns for the ninth year.

You’ll find a calendar of 24 authors publishing daily articles about web design, development, working with clients, accessibility as well as the archives for past year calendars.

Note: the calendar is in French.

Digital Marketing Holiday Calendar

New this year is the Digital Marketing calendar from TwoSix Digital.

Their holiday calendar includes tips for day-to-day community management, online advertising skills, strategies for analytical tools, and info on how to reach your ideal audience.

Samantha Ming’s CodeTidbits30 Calendar

Launched this year, Samantha Ming will tweet a daily JavaScript, HTML, or CSS code snippet. Only on Twitter, you’ll need to follow the #CodeTidbits30 hashtag.

Product Hunt

Focused on products and applications, 25 Days of Product Hunt is a Twitter thread highlighting products featured in December in past years.

Each day Product Hunt will share links to seven products/applications introduced on their site. I share this tweet thread because I discovered and use many of the products/apps regularly in my work and projects.

Ginny & Tonic’s Accessible Advent

A Twitter-only Advent calendar, Ginny & Tonic’s Accessible Advent was created by Ginny Butcher, a disabled law graduate and disability advocate.

Each day Butcher tweets one thing that would make life more accessible.

What I love about her calendar is how it’s raising awareness and changing perceptions. She’s asking other people to join her in using the #AccessibleAdvent hashtag to share their experiences.

Check out this interview with Butcher about her #AccessibleAdvent campaign.

Writing Challenge Advent Calendar

Focused on getting you writing, the Writing Challenge Advent Calendar from Forever Endeavour posts a new writing prompt or challenge each day on their blog and Instagram account.

Inclusive Design 24 Advent Calendar

Another Twitter-only Advent calendar, Inclusive Design 24 Advent shares a daily link to one of their favorite talks from past editions of their online Inclusive Design 24 conference.

Summary

I’ve always enjoyed the online Advent calendars; I’ve learned so much from them over the years.

Sad to discover several calendars did not return this year, including long-time favorites SysAdvent and 24 ways who led the way of Advent calendars.

They will be missed.
